Trump set to deport three million illegal immigrants

Donald Trump says he will deport or jail up to three million illegal immigrants US president-elect Donald Trump has said he will deport or jail up to three million illegal immigrants.

Trump made this disclosure in his first extensive interview on CBS’ 60 Minutes programme after his shocking victory in the US presidential election. According to him, those targeted would be migrants with criminal
records, such as gang members and drug dealers.

Trump noted that to hit such a high mark, it would involve either casting a very wide net that covers even the smallest infractions or also deporting legal alien residents of the US with criminal convictions.

Trump told CBS: “What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million, we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate.

“To pull this off, an expanded deportation force would almost certainly be necessary.” The President-elect didn’t specify what he would do with the millions of other undocumented migrants with some groups estimating there could be around 10 million people in the USA without proper papers. He continued:

“After the border is secure and after everything gets normalised, we’re going to make a determination on the people that they’re talking about who are terrific people, they’re terrific people but we are going to make a determination [on] that.”

He also confirmed that another election promise, to build a wall with Mexico, still stood but could include fencing. Asked about his plans for the Mexican border, he said “a wall is more appropriate” in some parts but “there could be some fencing.” “Other undocumented migrants would be assessed once the border was secured,” Trump added.

During the presidential campaign, Trump promised voters to take a hard line on immigration and to build a wall, which the Mexicans would pay for, to keep Latino migrants out of the USA. The US’ border with Mexico is approximately 2,000 miles long, much of it desert, and in some areas walls and fences have been built. Meanwhile, democrat candidate Hillary Clinton has blamed Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Director James Comey for her defeat to Donald Trump in Tuesday’s election.

Clinton reportedly made this known in a conference call with her top campaign donors on Saturday, November 12.
