UNN: 46th Convocation Ceremonies Flaged off, as Pst Adeboye to be Conferred with Honorary Doctorate Degree



The 46th convocation ceremonies of the first indigenous and the best university in Nigeria, the University of Nigeria has been flagged off at a press briefing today, 23rd January, 2017 at the Enugu Campus of the
premier university by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba.

Top on the list of events include a special convocation ceremony in honour of a distinguished alumnus of the apex university, who is the General Overseer Worldwide of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye who will be conferred with an honorary doctorate degree of the University of Nigeria, his alma mater.

Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, who announced this at a press briefing on Monday as part of the programmes to mark the 46th convocation of the University, said a total of 12, 448 students would also bag different degrees.

He disclosed that 10,425 would be for first degrees, diploma and certificates, while 2023 will be for post graduate diploma, masters degree and doctors of Philosophy degrees.

A breakdown of the degrees shows that 94 got 1st class honours; 3,098, 2nd class Upper; 5,145, 2nd class Lower; 1,653, 3rd class; Pass 121; unclassified 314 and diploma, 93.

According to Prof Ozumba, in keeping with the tradition of UNN, Adeboye and two other prominent Nigerians would be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees. They include Engineer Emeka Okwuosa and Engineer John Obinna Chukwu.

Prof. Ozumba, who expressed delight at the UNN’s position in the 2016 WEBOMETRICS ranking of universities, posited that the University would continue to remain at the top among Nigerian universities.

According to him, UNN had maintained the enviable position for three consecutive times.
“Having retained that enviable position consecutively for three rankings, we now consider it our birthright to remain at the top and we are not ready to abdicate that position anytime soon.

“Our gaze is now fixed on the number one position in Africa and we are upbeat about it,” Ozumba declared.
The university boss used the occasion to emphasize that staff welfare was uppermost in his administration, saying that they ensured that the university workers were paid their salaries promptly as well as promoted in due course.

“It may interest you to know that within the past two years, over 75 senior lecturers have been promoted to professors. This is unprecedented,” he pointed out.




attendance at the flag-off ceremonies were, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Charles Igwe, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Prof James Ogbonna, the Registrar, Barr Chris Igbokwe, the Chief Librarian, Prof Chinwe Ezeani, Deans of Faculties, Directors of Institutes, notably, Prof Florence Orabueze who is the Director, University Press and University Bookshop as well as the Deputy National President, University of Nigeria Alumni Association, Heads of Departments, Academic and non-Academic staff of the university, members of the alumni association and gentlemen of the press.
